“Well, I’m afraid that’s not possible, due to the past behavior of one of the band members,” Megadeth guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Mustaine revealed to Eddie Trunk during their conversation on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, when asked about the possibility of a full-lineup reunion for Megadeth‘s final show. Mustaine’s response was vague, failing to provide further details about the incident, instead stating (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), “Because, first and foremost, it would be unfair to the other band members if I didn’t perform with them as well. However, our collaboration with Marty [Friedman] in Japan was a no-brainer – it was brilliant. I have a lot of love for Marty. We had our differences, and he went his way, while I went mine. Nevertheless, my relationship with Marty was extremely intense, as it was my first significant collaboration with a guitar player.”
In February 2023, former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman reunited with the band in Japan for the first time in 23 years, performing several songs together. Before his departure in 1999, Friedman appeared on five Megadeth studio albums and eventually moved to Japan permanently in 2003.
Mustaine continued, “My working relationship with Chris [Poland] was great, but it didn’t quite match the level of my relationship with Marty. Similarly, my relationship with Jeff [Young] was good, but still not as strong as the one I had with Marty.”
Megadeth has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, with Wikipedia dedicating an entire page to the band’s former members. The complexity of the situation, combined with the various reasons for the members’ departures, makes a reunion challenging. Mustaine elaborated, “I probably wouldn’t have any issues performing with members from those lineups, except for the fact that Gar [Samuelson] has passed away, and I wouldn’t want to do anything that might seem unfair to the other band members.”
Mustaine refrained from providing more information about the behavior of the band member that has made a reunion unlikely, instead discussing the possibility of Megadeth‘s final show, “I’m not sure. I jokingly told our management to book some fake tour dates at the end, so I won’t be aware of the actual final show and end up getting emotional on stage.”
