Legendary Boston-based sludge band Grief has made a comeback online after a lengthy absence. Their 1994 debut album Come To Grief has been available on streaming services for some time, and now their other three records – Miserably Ever After from 1996, Torso from 1998, and …and Man Will Become the Hunted from 2000 – have also been added. Although there’s no word on physical reissues yet, Grief is now back on streaming services.
For those unfamiliar, Grief was active for most of the years between 1991 and 2009. The band released four full-length records and a multitude of EPs and splits throughout their career. Former Grief members Chuck Conlon, Jonathan Hébert, and Terry Savastano went on to form Come To Grief in 2014, releasing a significant amount of material since 2017.
Upon their breakup in 2009, then-bassist Eric C. Harrison stated the following: “We’ve chosen not to disclose our reasons for disbanding, but they may or may not include the following reasons.
- Jeff [Hayward; vocals, guitar] has finally fallen into a deep sleep, much like Rip Van Winkle, and will be out for the next 50 years.
- Ray [McCaffrey; drums] has eaten to the point where he can no longer fit through his front door and is unable to leave his house.
- John [Heidenrich; guitar, vocals] has become so deeply immersed in death metal that the rest of the band would have to become ghosts to jam with him, which none of them feel inclined to do.
- Eric has literally transformed into a dog and has yet to learn how to play bass or create artwork with his paws.
“We will not be performing at the Maryland Deathfest in May 2009. We apologize to anyone this disappoints, but sometimes these things happen.”
